How can you help me?

When you contact us for help we will arrange for you to have an initial meeting with one of our trained debt advisers where we will discuss your situation and how we can help you.

Remember, this is a confidential service and we will not share your personal information or circumstances with anyone without your permission.

Before we can give you advice on how best to help you, we need to work out how much money you have coming in and how much you are spending each month.

Once we have a clearer picture of your income and expenditure we can help you to prioritise important bills such as rent, utilities and food.

We can also look at ways of maximising your income and minimising your expenditure.

If you are struggling to pay your debts or are in arrears, we will contact the people that you owe money to (creditors) on your behalf and negotiate more realistic payment terms, where possible.

If appropriate, we can also advise on a range of debt solutions, including insolvency options.

What debt solutions can you offer me?

There are lots of different debt solutions available, but if you are in debt, not  all of these solutions will be right for you.  Sometimes there are a number of possible options but the key is to find out which of the solutions is best for your circumstances.  This can depend on:

  • The size of your debt
  • Whether you own a home or rent
  • Whether you are employed or out of work

Our trained advisers will help you to consider all of your options after working out your income and your expenditure and considering any assets you might have and the size of your debt.  We will use this information to work out which solution will allow you to become debt free in the shortest time possible, whilst protecting your assets (such as your home) and avoiding adding to your existing debts.

Not everyone needs to consider formal debt solutions such as bankruptcy, an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) or a Debt Relief Order. Sometimes it may involve helping you to understand what benefits and additional financial support you may be entitled to and sometimes it may be about giving you the confidence to communicate effectively with your creditors.

That's why its important to get impartial advice from a FREE debt and money advice service like Cornerstone Money Advice.
